President Bush Not Responsible for Economy (1/25/2002)

by Dean Hartwell

As I point out in Truth Matters, the President has little to do with the economy. There are too many factors over which the President has no control over to make a connection between the two.

So, I hope the Democrats do not blame President Bush for the recession we are currently in. Senate Majority Leader Daschle should back off from his earlier comments that Bush's tax cuts caused the recession.

In fact, it is more likely to be true the other way around: during a recession, most people have less with which to pay taxes, so lowering them (though not to the extent that Bush wants, as I point out below) is not a bad idea. Of course, the revenue would have to made up when the economy returns.
